Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the process of optimizing a website in order to increase its visibility in the organic search results on search engines, such as Google, Yahoo!, or Bing. Organic search results, also known as “natural” search results, are a search engine’s unpaid results. Search engines such as Google also offer paid results alongside their organic search results through Google Adwords, their Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising program.
SEO can be divided into two main categories: On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO:
- On-page SEO refers to factors on your own website that affect your rankings. The most important on-page factor is the quality of your website’s content, which may be measured by your content’s usefulness to visitors. Content must also be accessible to search engines and people must be able to easily link to it. Quality user experience, including mobile usability, is also a must.
- Off-page SEO refers to factors that exist on the Internet somewhere other than your website. These factors include social media pages and activity, inbound links (other websites linking to your website), reviews of your website or business, and more. Search engines pay attention to many factors that are evidence of the quality and popularity of your website.
